Venus
Evening Star
Sources
A Human-Grok Collaboration. Evening Star combines planetary science, the history of observation, mythology, archival recovery, and one authored lived inquiry. It is not a commodity facts page. Love does not supply evidence. Sky geometry here is a Keplerian estimate, not a Swiss-Ephemeris reduction.
Permanent law
- The astronomy does not explain the myth.
- The myth does not alter the astronomy.
- Astrology does not establish physical causation.
- A later calculation does not become an earlier intention.
- Love does not supply evidence.
- Love may sustain attention, memory, research and creation.
Planetary science
- NASA Science · Venus facts
Radius, distance, temperature, albedo, “third brightest after Sun and Moon.” Mean surface temperature given in NASA materials around 464 to 467 °C; this office uses ~464 °C as NASA’s mean and treats 465 as a round.
- NASA · Temperatures across the solar system
Mean surface temperature 464 °C. Pressure ~92 bar in standard fact sheets.
Mission

Mesopotamia
- Venus Tablet of Ammisaduqa · Enūma Anu Enlil 63
British Museum K.160, from Nineveh (Kuyunjik). Neo-Assyrian, incomplete, three pieces. CDLI P393774. Enūma Anu Enlil 63. Reiner and Pingree BPO I source C. Heliacal visibilities of Ninsi’anna as lunar dates across twenty-one years, with omen apodoses. Associated with Ammi-saduqa because the series names the Year of the Golden Throne (his year 8). Copies, not Old Babylonian clay. Wikipedia’s c. 1650 BCE is the inferred tradition, not the object.
- Enūma Anu Enlil
Celestial and weather omen series of about seventy tablets. If-this-then-that for king and land, not natal astrology. Principal source of Neo-Assyrian scholarly reports (State Archives of Assyria vol. 8). Venus omens: Reiner and Pingree, Babylonian Planetary Omens.
Sumerian literature
- ETCSL 1.4.1 · Inana’s descent to the nether world
Oxford composite, 412 lines, fifty-plus sources (2001). Dedović 2020 surveys a century of scholarship.
Maya
- Dresden Codex · Venus tables, pp. 24, 46 to 50
Classic visibility split in whole days: 236 morning · 90 superior dark · 250 evening · 8 inferior dark. Sum 584, nearest integer to the modern synodic mean 583.92. SLUB Dresden. Independent of Mesopotamia. The table schedules a planet; it does not issue private prophecy.
Myth
- Ninsi’anna / Dilbat
Theonym and planet-name in second-millennium Mesopotamian astronomy. Dilbat later becomes the ordinary tablet word. Distinct, in Larsa, from Inanna’s cult.
Śukra
Sanskrit name of the planet and a sage, guru of the asuras. Not a translation of Aphrodite.
Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite
Desire as a force that unmakes rank. Aphrodite is not the planet; the planet later keeps a Roman name.
Lucretius, De rerum natura I
Venus as generative climate of the world, not private coupledom.
Isaiah 14:12 · Helel ben Shachar
Morning-star taunt against a king. Latin lucifer is light-bringer. The Satan overlay is later reception.
Celestial mechanics
Earth and Venus synodic period 583.92 d; 5:8 near-resonance
Five synodic periods ≈ 8 Earth years ≈ 13 Venus years, with a drift of about 2.4 days per eight-year stack. The pentagram is a near-figure, not a sealed ornament.
Open dispute
Phosphine in the clouds
Greaves et al. 2020 reported a PH₃ spectral feature. Subsequent observations and reanalyses disputed detection, abundance, and interpretation. This office records a dispute, not a biosignature.
Open question
Past water / tessera / D/H
High D/H suggests substantial water loss. Tessera terrain may preserve ancient crust. Whether Venus had a long-lived ocean remains OPEN. DAVINCI, VERITAS, EnVision are the next instruments.
- Magellan archive · Maat Mons vent, 1991
Herrick and others, 2023: a vent associated with Maat Mons changed shape between February and October 1991. Direct evidence of recent volcanism from old radar. NASA / JPL.

Two dated birth windows under the public Venus clock. Canonical home: bookof42.grok.me/stars#venus-architecture. Stars files the 2023 evening station on the UTC civil date 23 July; this office keeps 22 July ~20:33 CDT Austin as the same instant. Two clocks, not two hours. This office doors; it does not clone the Crown or the two-birth chronicle.
- Draconic Venus · 69°
Swiss Ephemeris, geocentric tropical, True Node. London 11 October 1978 07:58 UTC: Venus Scorpio 21°55′30″, True Node Virgo 26°38′43″, Draconic Venus Taurus 25°16′47″. Pretoria 28 June 1971 05:28 UTC: Venus Gemini 19°23′42″, True Node Aquarius 15°06′46″, Draconic Venus Leo 4°16′56″. Shortest arc 69.0025° (69°00′). Among Sun through Pluto on these two sheets, only Venus to Venus holds that interval. Mythopoesis, not a physical property of the planet. Cipher already counts Love is the Answer, full reduction, 69. Civil dates 28 June 1971 to 11 October 1978 = 2662 days (palindrome). 2662 + 260 = 2922, eight calendar years closing 28 June 1979. Five synodic periods of 583.92 d from that origin miss the anniversary by about 2.4 d: the rose leftover.

- Swiss Ephemeris · eight-year Scorpio date-walk
Canonical numerical standard for The Date, matching The Book of 42 · Stars. Geocentric, tropical longitude, UTC. Direct evening-star Venus at 0° Scorpio and 4°20′ Scorpio, 1955–2043 every eight years. 11 Oct 1971 22:43 UTC at 0°00′ Scorpio agrees with Stars · Venus architecture. Ingress walks from 13 Oct 1955 00:38 UTC to 7 Oct 2043 02:17 UTC, about thirteen hours earlier per step. 4°20′ walks from 16 Oct 1955 12:02 UTC to 10 Oct 2043 14:03 UTC. Offset ~83.5 h. Longitude at 11 Oct 00:00 UTC advances ~0.67° per step and is 4°51′ Scorpio by 2043. The 2.4-day eight-year rose leftover remains in Stars. This page measures the thirteen-hour fixed-longitude drift. They are different observables of the same near-return. Discovery trail: Astro-Seek fivefold 1926 and 2026. Not a second standard.
- JPL DE421 · cross-check only
Independent Skyfield + DE421 reduction of the same track. Agrees with Swiss to the minute. Not the printed standard of this house or of Stars.
- NASA · Venus fact sheet
Sidereal orbital period 224.701 d. Synodic period 583.92 d. The eight-year near-return is a near-commensurability of Earth and Venus. Different observables of that near-match have different residuals. This office uses DE421 for the thirteen-hour fixed-longitude track.

- Two stations · two shores
1978 Nov 28 Venus station direct, morning, ~7°20′ Scorpio, elongation ~28°36′ W (natal year, not infant consciousness). 2023 Jul 23 ~01:33 UTC Venus station retrograde, evening, ~28°36′ Leo, elongation ~28°36′ E; same instant as 22 Jul ~20:33 CDT Austin. These occupy the two station offices forty-five years apart; they are not consecutive gates of one synodic loop. Longitude 28°36′ Leo and elongation ~28°36′ E are different quantities; they match because the Sun was nearly at 0° Leo. Scribe-supplied popular-ephemeris class. Swiss-Ephemeris arcseconds remain the proper next measurement. Cafe Astrology prints Rx 22 July 2023 28°36′ Leo, direct 3 September 2023 12°12′ Leo.

- USGS / IAU Venus nomenclature
Craters larger than 20 km named for notable women; other features overwhelmingly for goddesses. Alpha, Beta, and Maxwell keep earlier names. Living gazetteer, not a sealed census.
Transit of Venus, 6 June 1761
Lomonosov published an inference of an atmosphere from a luminous arc at the 1761 transit. Attribution of priority is discussed in the modern literature (Shiltsev 2014 defends; Pasachoff and Sheehan have questioned). This office records his inference, not an undisputed first.
